A Treatment Plan for Disease Caused by Mental and Emotional Imbalance

Five Element Sessions are one-on-one sessions with me and are a form of meditation. In a Five Element Session, I combine my skills as a medical intuitive, licensed acupuncturist, and practitioner of meditation to help you see how your habitual mental and emotional patterns manifest in your physical body. Five Element sessions are a way of treating disease caused by mental and emotional imbalance. In Five Element Sessions, we view disease symbolically. We create awareness of how the habitual patterns of your thoughts and emotions create imbalance in your physical body. We use mindfulness tools, cognitive behavioral therapy, and the tenets of meditation to organize and manage your inner world. And we cultivate an awareness of original nature, the Taoist concept of our deep unbreakable connection to the Tao itself.

Five Element Sessions are a treatment plan for disease that is caused by mental and emotional imbalance. (Curious about how thoughts and emotions can cause disease?) I use a five step approach to treating disease caused by mental and emotional imbalance. These five steps are rooted in the two qualities of mind developed in meditation practice: vipassana and samatha. Vipassana (pronounced vi-PAH-suh-nuh) means insight, clarity, and self-awareness. Samatha (pronounced SHA-muh-tuh) means calm abiding, serenity, tranquility, and making friends with what is. Cultivating vipassana and samatha in Five Element Sessions creates greater self-awareness while making friends with ourselves just as we are.

Here is a synopsis of that five step treatment plan:

Step One (Vipassana)

Self-awareness through knowing and understanding your five element constitutional type. Are you a Water, Fire, Wood, Metal, or Earth? Most of us have one predominant constitutional type and then have one or two other elements which also play a big part in our habitual mental and emotional tendencies. We then connect our mental and emotional imbalances to our bodies and disease. We see clearly how we invest our body’s Qi into these habitual thoughts and emotions.

Step Two (Samatha)

Once we have an understanding of our five element constitutional type, our habitual mental and emotional tendencies, and how those effect our body, we make friends with ourselves just as we are. Sometimes when we expand our self-awareness, we meet parts of ourselves that we don’t like. In this step, we learn to practice patience and kindness toward ourselves. We show kindness and friendliness to all parts of ourselves, light and dark, good and bad, pretty and ugly, nice and mean, organized and messy, clear and cloudy.

Step Three (Vipassana)

This step creates even greater self-awareness as we parse the habitual thoughts, emotions, body sensations, and behaviors unique to you. I have an exercise called Organizing Your Inner World where we create a chart of your habitual thoughts, emotions, body sensations, and behaviors thus giving us a direct link between what happens in our mind and what happens in our body.

Step Four (Vipassana)

In this step, we disempower our thoughts. Thoughts are the root of emotion, body sensation, and behavior. When we invest our Qi in a stressful thought, the result is emotional reactivity, uncomfortable body sensations, and unhealthy behavior. In this step, we bring awareness to how we invest our Qi into stressful thoughts and the consequences of that investment. We ask ourselves questions like: “how much of our vital Qi do we want to invest in that thought?”, “what is our return on investment?”, and “what are the consequences of continually investing our Qi in this thought?”. In this step, we bring logic, reasoning, and critical thinking to examine and question our habitual thoughts.

Step Five (Samatha)

In this last step, we remember original nature, the Taoist concept that we are never separate from the Tao or the intelligent, benevolent presence permeating and unfolding in everyone and everything. We all see glimpses of original nature in everyday life. To me original nature feels like a mash up of peace, joy, and love. It also feels like “okay-ness”…a great sense that everything is okay…absolutely and totally okay…just as it is. You may see a glimpse of original nature when you are out in nature itself. Or you may see a glimmer of it in a young child who has not yet forgotten original nature and therefore is content with life just as it is. Or you may witness original nature in your animal companion who always shows peace, joy, and love no matter what. In Taoist theory, we forget original nature as our habitual patterning solidifies throughout our lives, but original nature never goes away. It is always there waiting for us to remember…

In Five Element Sessions, we cultivate an awareness of and return to original nature. We learn to make returning to original nature a habit in daily life.

Five Element sessions give you:

  • your five element constitutional type
  • awareness of your habitual mental and emotional patterns
  • how those mental and emotional patterns effect your physical body
  • mindfulness tools which help you organize, manage, and work with your inner world of stressful thoughts and their subsequent emotions
  • creating an awareness of and connection to original nature, the Taoist principle which is the peace, joy, and love inherent within

Other things to know:

  • While Five Element Sessions are designed to work with the mind and emotions, there are times when things about your physical body come up such as foods to avoid or supplements to take. I always honor that when it shows itself and I am happy to spend time talking about that or answering any questions you may have around your physical body.
  • Ideally, five element sessions are done in succession. Like a form of therapy, we meet multiple times. How frequently we meet and how many times we meet is always up to you. In general, I find that 3-4 sessions is ideal.
